Located along Deptford High Street is an amusing and beautifully executed mural adorning the gable end of a Victorian terrace. His and Hers is the work of Patricio Forrester of South London public art company Artmongers. Originally created in 2002 for the Deptford X Festival this striking work in pink overlooking Deptford Market, has become a popular landmark in the up and coming artistic hotbed of Deptford and New Cross.
Created using water based masonry paint this was Patricio's first mural. Unlike many of London's murals which have a strong narrative element Patricio took an interventionist approach taking the physical circumstances of the site as the starting point, and aiming not so much at creating a statement as an atmosphere of surrealism. His initial idea involved hanging physical objects by chains around the chimneys but when this proved impractical he hit upon the idea of painting the necklaces and tie; an ironic take on an area traditionally viewed as deprived.
The first stage, the necklace and tie was completed in one day in 2002 at a cost of £150 thanks to donations from local businesses including paint from a local hardware store. The second stage, the chimneys, were painted later once an advertising hoarding had been removed. The horizontal chimneys are designed to reflect the physical chimneys, adding a further element of the surreal and unbalancing the image of the perfect couple like children. The mural originally had smoke/hair coming out of the chimney but this was later painted over.
